DIHK Economic Survey Fall 2021

Upswing threatened to be slowed down - Making Germany more attractive as a business location

DIHK presents survey results from autumn 2021

The situation is good at the moment, but the outlook is disappointing. The German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) sees the recovery process as being considerably weakened and does not expect a sustainable, investment-driven upswing. Above all, the factors of energy prices, raw material shortages and a shortage of skilled workers are the decisive risks. These are the results of the latest DIHK business survey, in which around 28,000 companies took part.

The DIHK is therefore lowering its growth forecast for 2021, which was 3.0 percent in early summer, to 2.3 percent. "The catch-up growth is flattening out. We expect GDP growth of 3.6 percent for the coming year," said the DIHK managing director. Of this, 1.6 percentage points are due to statistical effects. "The actual growth in the next year is only 2 percent," said Wansleben.

Current situation above average

43 percent of companies assess their current business situation as good, and only 14 percent as bad. The balance of positive and negative assessments thus jumps from 2 points in the previous survey to 29 points. The positive assessment of the situation is shared by all areas of the economy, but it turns out to be different. The current assessment of the situation is most clearly brighter in the sectors that have struggled the most and for the longest time with restrictions on their business operations in the corona pandemic: In retail, the situation balance climbed from minus 3 to 25 points, among service providers from minus 11 to 25 points . The mood is particularly good in the construction industry with a balance of 51 (after 41) points, but industry also reported improvements compared to early summer (35 after 25 points).
