Market Analysis "Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management in Azerbaijan"

In the run-up to the planned business trip in October 2021, focusing on "Sustainable Water and Wastewater Management for Azerbaijan," the AHK Short Analysis informs German companies about the current challenges, governmental measures, and market opportunities in the water and wastewater sector of Azerbaijan.

Especially in water and wastewater management, Azerbaijan is willing intensively to promote the modernisation of infrastructure in the future. A governmental regulation on the effective use of water resources dated 2020 aims to accelerate developments for better drinking water supply in cities and rural areas while at the same time solving ecological problems in water supply and water management. Not only is the private supply network, but also soil irrigation in demand on investment. In particular, international partners are to be supported in this regard.

Over the past 25 years, the resource-rich republic has increased its GDP by more than ten times thanks to oil production. The Absheron Peninsula has been the focus of the chemical and heavy industry operations for more than six decades, which has resulted in the contamination of soil, air, and water. Azerbaijan is also facing acute water shortages: the Caucasus has only 310 billion cubic meters of freshwater (drinking water, including groundwater), of which Azerbaijan accounts for only about one-tenth. The per capita water resources in Azerbaijan are about 7 times lower than, for example, in neighboring Georgia.

This short analysis is a vital component of the project "Sustainable Water Management in Azerbaijan" initiated by the AHK Azerbaijan within the framework of the export initiative environmental technologies of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV). In addition to the analysis of the initial situation and challenges in the field of water management and environmental protection, as well as the resulting political and technical measures, within this short analysis, AHK Azerbaijan provides German companies with a database containing the prominent contact persons and decision-makers of the sector.

Moreover, the AHK Azerbaijan invites German companies and key Azerbaijani players to hold a joint strategy workshop in October 2021 within the German-Azerbaijani Economic/Business forum framework "Sustainable Development of Water and Wastewater Management in Azerbaijan." Both the workshop and the Economic Forum will focus on a four-day business trip in October 2021, which will allow German companies to get to know the situation on the ground and facilitate a technical and solution-oriented exchange between the relevant stakeholders. Participating companies will gain access to the country's critical players through B2B meetings, visits by government agencies, round tables, and company visits.
